Games on Linux
It is a slight misconception to say that gaming isn't possible on Linux, it is more accurate to say: gaming on Linux requires us to jump through a few hoops that users on Windows do not have to.
These hoops, however, have been made easier to jump through courtesy of a few indisposable tools: Proton and WINE.
There are some games which may never be compatible with gaming on Linux. These are primarily those that use kernel-level anticheat software.
Check for specific games at areweanticheat.com for the presence or absence of incompatible anticheat, and protondb for games verified to run with compatibilty tools.
The easiest method to use Proton is via Steam; you launch the game and Steam takes care of the underlying compatibility layer.
Other launchers such as Lutris use WINE; Lutris also has the aim of being as easy for the end-user to use as Steam with a selection of community-provided install scripts for known required workarounds.
Also be wary that Linux-specific tinkering can be detected by anticheat. It is almost unheard of for people to get bans for it but you have to be aware of the risks.

That I play and also don't have Linux-native ports.
Final Fantasy XIV
The third-party launcher XIVLauncher has compatibility with Linux built-in, the launcher handles that for you.
For players locked into Steam you must have Steam open and signed into the account that possesses the FFXIV service account you wish to use.
There are several quality-of-life additions that I would reccomend the launcher for, just don't do Crimes and Felonies with it. Fight Club rules apply when using the functionality that it allows: you do not talk about it anywhere in-game, and you do not talk about it with the official hashtags.
You generally will not catch a ban for using it, but anything beyond the standard features should be regarded as a potential threat. ANYTHING that makes it back to the server is detectable, so do NOT have anything to do with modifications that change:
- Your map position
- Your character data (race, gender, appearance, etc.)
- Your house furniture arrangement
- There are certain things that are 100% impossible with the current constraints of the housing system. Learn the legitimate methods.
We exist by the grace of Yoshi-P's willing ignorance and we should be grateful every single day for that.
Arknights: Endfield
Assuming there hasn't been an easier method discovered, you will need a few things:
- The ProtonPlus flatpak OR other method to add dwproton to your steam compatibility tools
- A little patience
Once you have those, you need to do some very specific things:
- Ensure you have 'dwproton' installed in your Steam compatibility tools folder.
- The easiest method for this is to install the ProtonPlus flatpak, select Steam in the top left, locate DW-Proton in the list and install from there.
- You can also easily update or change versions from here.
- Download the installer, add to Steam as a non-Steam game, and run it with the latest version of dwproton.
- Complete the installation then:
- Locate the installed launcher
- Add the launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game
- Run the launcher with the latest version of dwproton.
- Install the game from the launcher running under dwproton.
- You may now remove the launcher installer from steam.
- Set the compatibility tool in the game properties on Steam: 'force the use of a specific compatibility tool' should be set to dwproton.
- Every time you want to launch Endfield, do so with your Steam shortcut as this will ensure the game runs in the right environment.
